1969 Chevrolet Turbo-Jet Z/28 Show Car

Somewhere between Factory Stock/Custom and Muscle car, but it is Camaro so I’ll post it here…

The Turbo-Jet Z/28’s name was derived from the label applied to cars powered by Chevrolet’s Big Block engine and a jet aircraft theme was also incorporated.  The inclusion of Z/28 moniker was purely due to the meteoric rise and current popularity, including new race heritage of that option package.   One of GM’s more bizarre creations, (but then consider the era), this Camaro based car included such oddities as a faux jet turbine intake in the grille and an afterburner exhaust between the taillights.   Since it appeared to have standard dual exhausts, it is highly doubtful it did anything functional, not even as cool as the Batmobile (which it was arguably inspired by) in that regard….  Even the tail lights looked cheap being only the transparent red parts of the RS units with no chrome trim or even provision for back up lights.

While it appears to be made from a second generation Camaro at first glance, in fact it was built from a base model 1969 Camaro convertible.  If you compare the “sheet metal parts” that look like a ‘70 Camaro with an actual one, you’ll see the shape and proportions are different even though the styling is similar in a somewhat warped fashion.  Even the headlights are not set into the bezels as a ’70 would be.  In reality, it had a fiberglass body except for  the stock ’69 Camaro deck lid.  The front clip is a seamless one piece unit.  It has been suggested this was made by using an early F-body mock up version, or a fiberglass lift of a clay exercise intended to be an attempt at the second generation Camaro. The dash is also styled similarly to the second generation Camaro, possibly to give a glimpse of things to come, or leftover from the styling studio.

Furthermore, even though its name indicates that it had a Big Block (plus the Z/28s were all Small Block powered,) and the literature of the day claimed it did have an L88 427, most involved with the project say it was no real secret it was powered by an anemic 283 Small Block with a two barrel Rochester 2GV carb connected to a Saginaw 4 speed.  It didn’t even have true dual exhaust, just a Y split off a common pipe.

The interior is also aircraft themed to some degree.  The floor panels were perforated ostensibly to allow water to drain out due to it being a true speedster indicating there was some forethought to actually using it?  Who knows…  The entire interior was finished with an industrial gray/black Zolatone epoxy finish.  The door panels mirror the floor design and mimic aircraft dive brakes, (literature stated from a Dauntless dive bomber) and the steering wheel sports an aircraft yoke-like configuration.  Plenty of large gauges also give a nod to the aero look.  A T.V. monitor in the console said “futuristic style” for the day.  The headrests were said to be inspired fighter planes, as was the anti-glare panel on the hood.  The rear spoiler was made of rubber and looked just like a 1969 unit.  The windshield was made of acrylic or poly carbonate, not known for sure, but subsequent scratching as it progressed through the show circuit makes it very unlikely it was glass.  The car also had no seat belts and the only door actuators were buttons inside the silver door panels.  The traditional floor high beam switch location was actually where the start/stop button for the engine was located and no keyed ignition was used.

The Model:

I reworked the front of a ’70 Camaro and grafted the top and rear of a ’69 together.  The dash is from the ’70 kit with gauges made from brass.  Interior details, as were the unique “Turbo-Jet” parts were machined from aluminum. The wheels centers are fronts from the Revell Landy Charger with machined outer rims and backing plates.  Graphics were copied and printed as decals.Testors Panther Pink looked to be a close match to the “Turbo Ma-Jet-A” color originally used.

The Rise of Rosberg

?s 2010 may not have been spectacular. He didn?t even stand-out in a year when fans were purring at the potential that is currently in the sport.

Many chose to wax lyrical about Sebastien Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica and dream of their title-battles that could reach epic proportions in the next decade.

But Rosberg can easily ...

I haven't done a truck in a little while and I thought that it was time to build this one.  I got this when the kit first came out as evident by the one-piece box design and the thick looking plastic.

And, there will be a few changes made.  A set of Pegasus 19" Chrome T's and disc brakes, a resin K&N air filter from Scale Dreams, a hood scoop from the AMT '87 Mustang kit, and stripe decals from three '06 Mustang GT kits.

My paint will be Tamiya TS-8 Italian Red with a gray interior.

More to come.....

Season Review: Force India

Force India?s third season in Formula One saw them finish seventh in the Constructors Championship with 68 points.

Since 2008, Force India have improved considerably year by year and the team can be very proud of what they have achieved in a short amount of time.

Yes they will have been disappointed not to have held onto sixth in Constructors this season. But 2010 ...

Cannonball Run 2011

Okay folks it's that time again. Lets kick the tires and light the fires.

As I've mentioned in the announcement thread, this is the thirtieth anniversary of the film, The Cannonball Run. For me and a lot of others, it helped forge the love of cars and more specificly car movies. It still puts a smile on my face.

The rules.

Your car MUST represent a car that "could" have appeared in the 1981 film. It must be a 1981 or older vehicle, and must use the technology and stylings of the day. If you plan on using some tech or items that someone finds in question it is up to the BUILDER to provide proof that it was in use back in the day. So rule of thumb, if in doubt, do your research. * I'm no auto expert, so I'm relying on the SA community to help keep us honest on this rule.*

The car must represent a car that you would like to race across country. Remember huge horsepower is great quarter mile, but you should be thinking reliability to drive from NY to LA.

Any scale.

No diecast.

The race is open to vehicles of any origin, foreign or domestic. It does not have to be a car that was commecially available in the U.S.. If you wanna race a Holden, by all means do so.

A started kit are allowed as long as you are NOT more than 25% along.

A parts box build or a tear down & rebuild are fine also.

We'd like to see an unstarted kit or whatever mess-o-parts you are starting from.

Wheels are gonna be a bear on this build. Remember 1 millimeter is roughly 1 scale inch if the kit is 1/25. So if your wheels are much larger than 16 millimeters across, they are gonna be too big .  Mixing scales is gonna be a pain too, a 1/24 scale rim is 17-18 millimeters across so on a 1/25 scale body they are going to look too large.

The last day of this CBP is going to be December 1st 2011. A bout two weeks prior I'll open a thread for you to post pics of your completed builds. On Dec 2 I'll close that thread and open a poll for our peers here to vote on their favorite.

You may build as many models for this CBP as you have time for, HOWEVER, you may only enter ONE car for the poll in December. So pick your best one. After all you can't drive more than one car at a time can you?

Anyone can enter this CBP AT ANY TIME. As long as we see the beginning, a build progression and an end result, I don't care if you knock one out on the weekend before the race.

Let's get to it.

'The point of no confidence is quite near'

The wreckage of Jochen Rindt's car at Barcelona © Getty Images
An excellent insight into the world of F1 as it used to be can be found on the regularly-interesting Letters of Note website. It publishes a hitherto unseen letter from Jochen Rindt to Lotus boss Colin Chapman written shortly after Rindt?s crash at Barcelona which was a result of the wing system on Lotus 49 collapsing at speed.
?Colin. I have been racing F1 for 5 years and I have made one mistake (I rammed Chris Amon in Clermont Ferrand) and I had one accident in Zandvoort due to gear selection failure otherwise I managed to stay out of trouble. This situation changed rapidly since I joined your team. ?Honestly your cars are so quick that we would still be competitive with a few extra pounds used to make the weakest parts stronger, on top of that I think you ought to spend some time checking what your different employes are doing, I sure the wishbones on the F2 car would have looked different. Please give my suggestions some thought, I can only drive a car in which I have some confidence, and I feel the point of no confidence is quite near.?
A little more than a year later Rindt's Lotus suffered mechanical breakdown just before braking into one of the corners. He swerved violently to the left and crashed into a poorly-installed barrier, killing him instantly.

F1: Renault: Heidfeld already leading team

Renault: Heidfeld already leading team By Dieter Rencken and Matt Beer Sunday, February 27th 2011, 10:59 GMT Renault team boss Eric Boullier says it was obvious from Nick Heidfeld's first few laps in the car that he was the man the squad needed to lead its 2011 charge in the absence of the injured Robert Kubica. Heidfeld will fill in alongside Vitaly Petrov at Renault until Kubica recovers from the multiple injuries he suffered in a rally crash three weeks ago. The German had a test audition for Renault before being snapped up, and Boullier said he was very impressed by the way Heidfeld immediately took charge. Related posts:

Di Resta and Hulkenberg fight for Force India seat

As the winter nights have shortened so too have the prospects of finding a Formula 1 drive for two of the sport's brightest prospects.

Nico Hulkenberg - rated as the best rookie of 2010 - and Paul di Resta - Britain's third driver in Formula 1 alongside Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button - find themselves fighting for a drive.

At the end of the season, Williams released Hulkenberg in favour of cash-rich GP2 champion Pastor Maldonado.

Hulkenberg's sudden unemployment has complicated matters for Di Resta as the German is now closing in on the Force India seat the Scot has been warming all season as the team's reserve.

To add to the dilemma, Force India's incumbent drivers, Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Luizzi, still have ties to the team with Italian Liuzzi contracted for 2011 and German Sutil sitting on a one-year option to continue.

Formula 1 insiders believe the hearts and minds of Force India are with Di Resta and the team want to give him one of the two seats that are listed as 'TBA' on the official entry list.

After joining the Silverstone-based team as a reserve for 2010, the Scot drove capably in eight first practice sessions on grand prix weekends.

The auburn-haired Di Resta, a laidback and likeable addition to the paddock, quietly impressed the team with his technical feedback and commitment.

At the same time, the 24-year-old proved he was a winner by clinching the German Touring Car championship (DTM) for Mercedes on his weekends away from F1.

His manager Anthony Hamilton - father of McLaren driver Lewis - says: "There hasn't been one bit of negative information from the team about Paul.

"He has done a great job, the team love him. He's a champion and a leader. Nothing has changed; he is still a contender for a race seat. We are very positive."

Hulkenberg, however, is also an intriguing prospect for any F1 team.

The 23-year-old stole the headlines in the midst of the dramatic championship battle by snatching a blistering pole at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Yes, Hulkenberg had benefited from some tactical groundwork by team-mate Rubens Barrichello on his previous qualifying lap but the German's feat was still far beyond that of any of the other four F1 newcomers.

Humorous and straight-talking, Hulkenberg came into F1 on the back of a glittering junior career - where he won titles in karting, Formula BMW, Formula Three and the 2009 GP2 Series - and is now a highly-rated F1 prospect

Both Hulkenberg and Di Resta are gifted drivers - but in F1 money often talks louder than talent.

Despite being impressed by Hulkenberg's "exceptional" skills, Sir Frank Williams let him go in favour of Maldonado simply because he could bring in a reputed 10m euros - largely from Venezuela's state oil company - at a time when the Williams team had lost several key business partners.

When it comes to securing their own future, the problem for both Hulkenberg and Di Resta is that they don't bring any cash to the table.

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions. If you're reading via RSS, you'll need to visit the blog to access this content.

Hulkenberg himself says: "It has become much, much harder to open doors if your application does not come with a serious sponsor package and you really only rely on your talent as the sole 'sales argument'."

The complex situation at Force India means the team need to find the cash to buy Liuzzi out of his existing contract - so contributions from a replacement would be welcome.

And of all those in the frame only Sutil, who is understood to have bought around 2m euros to the team in 2010, has the immediate funds to strike that deal.

Force India's engine partner Mercedes-Benz could also influence the team's decision.

What if its own-brand Mercedes Grand Prix team wanted to scout out potential replacements for Michael Schumacher or Nico Rosberg by paying to place a driver in another team?

Di Resta is already well-connected and well-liked by Mercedes, especially after his DTM win, but Hulkenberg, as a rising German star, could be a perfect future fit for the Silver Arrows.

For now, Di Resta and Hulkenberg are playing the waiting game.

Hulkenberg's management company, whose founder Willi Weber also plotted Schumacher's career, opened talks at the final race in Abu Dhabi and said they had expected Force India to have made their decision by now.

Di Resta is sitting down with the team this week to discuss his future role.

Although nine cockpits are still to be filled on the 2011 grid, options elsewhere remain squeezed.

Hulkenberg's team have already approached Toro Rosso and Renault but found no room at the inn.

Toro Rosso will stick with Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi, with newly-signed third driver Daniel Ricciardo waiting in the wings. The renamed Lotus Renault team are widely expected to retain Russian rookie Vitaly Petrov alongside star driver Robert Kubica.

Timo Glock has confirmed he is staying at Marussia Virgin, with Brazilian Lucas di Grassi and Belgian Jerome D'Ambrosio - both of whom come with sponsorship - the favourites to join him. Back-of-the-grid Hispania first need to find someone to build their 2011 car before confirming drivers.

Di Resta already has a contract to continue as Force India's third driver in 2011, while Hulkenberg has been linked to the same role at Mercedes and Ferrari.

In the fickle world of Formula 1, it is never a bad idea to have a Plan B.

Vettel set for titles aplenty

© Daily Telegraph
Tom Cary says in his column in the Daily Telegraph that the man dubbed ?Baby Schumi? has plenty of time to match or even surpass his compatriot?s record haul of seven world titles after he cinched his first in the Abu Dhabi night.
?Here, after all, is a young man, already dubbed ?Baby Schumi? by Germany?s tabloid press, winning the first of what will presumably be multiple world championships, and all at the tender age of 23. Plenty of time yet to match Schumacher's incredible haul of seven world titles. And yet, their phenomenal ability to drive racing cars apart, there is little similarity between the two men. ?There are still lingering doubts over his racing ability but with such blistering qualifying pace he is nearly always leading from the front anyway. Vettel is set for multiple world championships. Just don?t call him Baby Schumi.?
The Guardian?s Paul Weaver says it was difficult to begrudge Vettel his moment of glory after he won the first of what will be many world titles. He also looks back at some of the season?s highlights.
?An amazing Formula One season produced its final twist here on Sunday when Sebastian Vettel, who had never led the title race, won his first world championship. It is difficult to begrudge him his glory, for he had more poles (10) than any other driver and shared the most wins (five) with Fernando Alonso. There will be red faces as well as red cars and overalls at Ferrari, though, for deciding to bring their man in when they did, only to see him re-emerge into heavy traffic. ?Among the highlights, and every race felt like a highlight after the bore-start in Bahrain, there was that wonderful beginning to his McLaren career by Jenson Button, who won two of his first four races, even though he couldn't keep up the pace, especially in qualifying. ?Hamilton once again drove his heart out, and outperformed a car that looked a little too ordinary at times. He was superb in Montreal. Then there was Webber, the Anglophile Aussie who was the favourite among most neutrals to win the title. There was that spectacular crash when he ran into the back of Heikki Kovalainen and the most famous of his four wins, at Silverstone, when he said to his team at the end of the race: 'Not bad for a No2 driver.' ?But in the end there was only one German who mattered. It was the remarkable Vettel. This will be the first of a clutch of championships for him.?
The Independent?s David Tremayne focuses on the plight of the other title contenders, writing it is easier to feel more sorry for one than the other.
?It was impossible not to feel for both Webber and Alonso. Yet while a frustrated Alonso gestured at Petrov after the race, the Australian, predictably, refused to complain about his pitstop timing. ?A world championship seemed an inevitable part of Sebastian Vettel's future, but it came a little sooner than most expected, after his recent tribulations. You wouldn't bet against several more, and if that record-breaking streak continues, perhaps even Schumacher's achievements will be overshadowed.?
And the Mirror?s Byron Young elaborates further on the petulant behaviour of Fernando Alonso on his slowing down lap after his title dreams ended behind the Renault of Vitaly Petrov.
?Fernando Alonso was hurled into more controversy last night for a wild gesture at the former Lada racer who cost him the title. But the Spaniard brushed off accusations he gave Russian Vitaly Petrov the finger for ruining his title hopes by blocking him for 40 laps as they duelled over sixth place. "The Ferrari ace was caught on television cruising alongside the Renault driver on the slowing down lap and gesticulating from the cockpit. Petrov was unrepentant: "What was I supposed to do? Just get out of his way, pull to the side? I don't think that is how we race. It was important for the team for me to get points."

Tesla CEO Elon Musk: Batteries Aren't the Future

Tesla Motors has based their whole business model on batteries. They kind of have to since, after all, they sell electric cars. Tesla?s Roadster contains 6,831 lithium ion laptop-style batteries and the company’s up and coming 2012 Model S will have around 8,000 lithium ion laptop-style batteries. This is why it?s such a surprise to hear Tesla CEO Elon Musk say that he doesn?t think batteries will be part of the breakthrough that really pushes electric vehicle transportation into the mainstream.

While speaking at Cleantech Forum in San Francisco, Musk said, ?If I were to make a prediction, I?d think there?s a good chance that it is not batteries but capacitors [that will facilitate the breakthrough].?

Musk might be onto something. One of the biggest drawbacks to electric vehicles is the ?range anxiety? caused by the very batteries that electric vehicles need to store their energy. Batteries not only take a long time to charge up, but the state of their charge is largely dependent on ambient temperatures.

Capacitors are a lot like batteries. They?re commonly used now in consumer electronics to maintain power while the batteries are charging. Capacitors can also release quick bursts of electricity and since they can withstand more charging cycles than batteries, they should last longer. The only thing that batteries have on capacitors is that they can store more energy.

Now we?re not engineers, but if Tesla was somehow capable of combining large capacitors with a battery, so that the capacitors could both run the car and charge the battery when the battery is depleted, and supplement it with regenerative braking and solar panels, they might just be onto something BIG. In theory, that could be a real self-sustaining car. That could also be just the breakthrough that Tesla needs to remain viable into the 21st century auto industry.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk: Batteries Aren't the Future originally appeared on topspeed.com on Wednesday, 23 March 2011 20:00 EST.
